E-Mobility made by Dürr - Switching a battery in 5 minutes
The plant manufacturer Dürr is opening up a new growth area with the construction of battery switch stations for electric vehicles. Dürr has signed a framework contract for supplying these battery switch stations with the company Better Place. The first systems are already being supplied under this contract.
Better Place plans to use a simple but revolutionary concept to capture the market of electric vehicles: the Israeli company offers real mobility packages consisting of vehicle, battery and electricity. With Dürr, Better Place has brought a powerful and experienced partner on board for the necessary infrastructure of charging stations and battery switch stations.
Dürr draws on its extensive process knowledge in the field of vehicle final assembly in the construction of this new technology. Automatic fastening and joining processes are common in final assembly. This is exactly the foundation for exchanging an empty battery with a freshly charged battery. This process is similar to unit assembly, in which chassis and powertrain are assembled.
The capacity of the battery switch stations can be variably designed due to their modular construction. Multiple types of batteries can be replaced and installed in different vehicles. It is a fully automatic station which works completely without an operator. Depending on the type of vehicle, the battery exchange time lasts up to five minutes – no longer than traditional fueling. Furthermore, the stations serve as a buffer for today’s hard-to-regulate renewable energies.
Today's batteries in the form of high performance lithium-ion accumulators have a range of up to 160 kilometers. That's enough for short distances if the vehicles are recharged when not operating. Since charging times are currently still too long, however, the crucial step towards comprehensive electric mobility is an electric car with a battery that is replaced in a fully automatic exchange station as needed.
