Geothermal resources

Earth bore probes

Dürr uses geothermal heat and cold to temper the building complex. Earth probes are positioned at depths of just under 100 meters. The probes absorb heat from the ground in the winter and transfer heat to the ground in summer, when the soil is comparatively cooler than the air above ground. This transfer of energy is achieved with the help of water as a carrier medium. The use of groundwater functions in a similar way – water taken from extraction wells is allowed to return to the ground via injection wells. The temperate water serves to cool rooms in summer and to heat them in winter. When heating is required, an intermediate heat pump is activated to raise the temperature of the water to the necessary level. Based on thermal mass activation by the building, warm or cool water is pumped through plastic piping in the ceilings of the rooms. The heating and cooling capacity obtained from geothermic resources is almost equivalent to that of a co-generation unit.
