Dürr in Russia – A stronger presence than ever

Dürr built its first paint shop in Russia forty years ago and since then has accompanied both local and foreign customers through periods of economic and political change. Today, with the activities of all six business units, Dürr’s presence in one of the world’s most important automotive markets is stronger than ever.  

No less than four new automobile works are being constructed in and around St. Petersburg – a concentration that has led for some time to the town being dubbed “the Russian Detroit”. At present, Dürr has a large order volumes to its credit at three of those new factories: Ford’s existing final assembly facility is to be expanded by 27 FAStplant® final assembly system modules, a new paint shop is under construction for another OEM and Dürr has been awarded a double package at Nissan, where a new paint shop and a new final assembly facility will be built in parallel. In 2006, Dürr successfully carried out a similar project for KIA in Slovakia.   

Activity is also intense in regions long distances from the “auto cluster” of St. Petersburg or the headquarters of Dürr Systems in Moscow. At Elabuga, SeverStal will commence serial production of the Ducato under license from Fiat in the second half of 2008. It, too, will be based on FAStplant®, a system that is ideal for the dynamic Russian market because of the expansion flexibility it offers. Dürr is also currently building a new paint shop for Volkswagen at Kaluga and TagAZ of Taganrog has placed orders for three paint shop projects with Dürr Korea.

Supported as they are by the global network of Dürr Group companies and manufacturing locations, Dürr Systems in Russia see themselves as a sales and service provider: “We combine local competence with the security and reassurance of project management provided from Germany or from other experienced Group locations; this enables us to blend customer proximity and high quality”, explains Michael Broese, Head of the Dürr operation in Moscow. “At the same time we are expanding our supplier base in Russia and quoting prices for all service packages and products in Rubels. This is how we are responding to the tremendous dynamics and the specific needs of the Russian market.”
