GM aims for standardization - with Dürr FAS
05/20/2005
Dürr Factory Assembly Systems has signed a framework agreement with GM for the global supply of standardized skillet conveyors. Dürr FAS is responding to the trend in the automotive industry towards more and more standardization within vehicle manufacture, production processes and manufacturing equipment.
For each type of standard conveyor system GM selects one single partner that then supplies that system over a three year period to all GM factories that are to be equipped with it on a worldwide basis. The focus of this standardization program lies in the global supply of products that are 'identical' in terms of technology, quality and delivery and installation times.
Dürr's decision to follow this path is not a random one. Dürr was recently nominated as Supplier of the Year 2004 by the joint venture company, Shanghai General Motors (SGM). Dürr's competence and capabilities with regard to its products, its global structure and worldwide guidelines for both manufacturing and project management ensure that Dürr is able to meet GM's exacting requirements.
Dürr FAS has wide-ranging experience in the construction of skillet systems for use in body and final assembly shops and has already supplied and installed 16 plants all over the world. Induction technology is increasingly being brought into use: skillet systems supplied to Magna Steyr of Graz (Austria) and to BMW in Munich (Germany) were equipped with MOVITRANS®, the inductive power and data transfer system. Dürr FAS has received two further orders - from Jaguar Castle Bromwich (UK) and KIA Zilina (Slovakia) - for this technology that is increasingly becoming the standard.
The Dürr Group is one of the world's leading suppliers of production systems and of modules and components for the measuring and process technology fields. The company focuses primarily on the automobile and aviation industries as well as the mining and basic materials industries. Dürr achieved sales of Ä 1.9 billion in 2004 with about 7,300 employees.
