Alternative oven heating: 220 °C with solar thermal energy and combined heat and power
Dürr integrates the use of sustainable energy concepts in the paint shop. At their 8th Open House Dürr presents the use of solar thermal energy for heating the oven. Together with a sophisticated combined heat and power system, the oven can be heated to the required 220°C - even when the sun is not shining.
For the oven, the greatest energy consumer after the spray booth, Dürr relies on low maintenance and compact Fresnel reflectors which concentrate sunlight and thus function very efficiently. While conventional collectors produce process heat of only 80° C, Dürr achieves temperatures of up to 400° C with these high-performance collectors. This way Dürr can heat ovens whose operation requires temperatures up to 220° C. This pioneering step of energy independence is topped off with the use of combined heat and power. With it, electricity is produced via a low-emission combustion process in a micro gas turbine, whose waste heat is used to heat the oven. Both technologies result in significantly lower CO2 emissions and conserve non-renewable energy sources.
In the case of the oven, in sunny paint shop locations about 30 to 50% of the required energy is obtained from solar energy. A significant reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 1,000 tons a year contributes to production with very low emissions and thus helps conserve non-renewable energy sources.
An additional effect: Since the solar collectors reflect the sun’s rays, the paint shop does not heat up quite so much. This means that less energy is needed for air conditioning.
