Paint application (by spray application) Paint gives the car its finishing touch and defines its visual appearance. As a rule, three paint coats are applied: 1. Primer paint: Primer is applied after cathodic electro-coating and its function is to level out any uneven spots or areas, to give the paint coat its color and to protect it from stone-chipping and UV radiation. 2. Base coat: Base coat gives the car its color and its metallic effects. 3. Clear coat: Clear coat is the top paint layer. It gives the surface its gloss and chemical resistance (e.g. against cleaning agents).
