More order successes for Dürr in China
03/02/2004
The Dürr technology group is further expanding its position in the rapidly growing Chinese market. Our Paint Systems business unit is going to build a complete automobile paint shop for the joint venture Shanghai General Motors (SGM). And, from our Final Assembly Systems business unit, SGM has also ordered conveyor systems for a new final assembly plant. Together, the two orders are worth about Euro 60 million.
SGM has placed the two orders in the framework of setting up its new Jinqqiao South site in Shanghai, where it intends to produce various passenger car models for the domestic market. Dürr is building the new paint shop in the capacity of general contractor. The order package includes automated robot lines for the application of primer and top coat and equipment for the pretreatment, dip painting, and drying of car bodies. Added to that are conveyor systems, workstations, spray booths, fire safety fixtures, and ventilation systems. Dürr will also supply the process control and monitoring technology.
Dürr got the nod for the final assembly conveyor systems in the new SGM plant primarily because of its innovative technologies. It is delivering, among other things, its TTS skillet conveyor system with hoisting equipment, which allows flexible positioning of car bodies in the assembly process. Also, the new Automatic Guided Vehicle (known as AGV), which operates with contactless power supply, will be used in Shanghai in the "marriage" production stage (joining car body and drive train). This strategically important job represents the first conveyor systems project to be realized by Dürr in the area of vehicle final assembly in China.
"These two order successes underscore our ability to perform in China. We are going to further expand our capacities there in order to continue participating in dynamic growth of that market in the future," said Stephan Rojahn, Chairman of Dürr AG's Board of Management.
Shanghai General Motors is a 50/50 joint venture of General Motors, the world's largest automobile producer, and Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC (Shanghai Auto Industry Corporation).
The Dürr Technology Group is one of the world's leading suppliers of production systems and manufacturing support services for automobile manufacturers and suppliers. With a workforce of about 13,000 employees, Dürr achieved sales of almost Euro 2.1 billion in 2002. Its business figures for 2003 will be released on April 29th.
