5th Open House at Dürr Systems GmbH, Bietigheim-Bissingen – Exhaust Air Purification and Energy Management: Dual Benefits with Dürr Environmental Systems
09/23/2005
Bietigheim-Bissingen, September 23, 2005 – Dürr Systems GmbH is highlighting an advanced combination of technologies for environmental protection: That of using air heated during exhaust air treatment first to oxidize pollutants and then to provide heating power for the manufacturing process. In this way the plants supplied by the Stuttgart company not only control emissions reliably but also make a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption.
At the Dürr 'Open House' event at Bietigheim-Bissingen Satpal Bhatnagar, Head of Dürr's Environmental and Energy Systems business unit, said, 'Power costs are a very significant factor in the cost of operation.' He added, 'That's why today energy management has a decisive part to play in plant concepts. A good air pollution abatement plant must be capable of offering both quality and energy savings.'
The success with which the company has bid for orders in recent months demonstrates how close Dürr is, in combining exhaust air pollution control with energy management, to the line of thought of its customers. At Advansa in Great Britain Dürr is currently building a regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) plant where the heating energy produced is used in the manufacture of PET plastic materials. For Voestalpine of Austria Dürr is developing an RTO plant that is not only capable of removing pollutants arising during the metal coating process but also of producing energy. Another system that functions in a similar way is being supplied to Tenax Fibers of Germany, a customer manufacturing carbon fibers for aircraft.
Advances in new markets
Dürr is actively opening up new markets for environmental technologies with its dual technology products. Initially air pollution control systems were supplied almost exclusively for automotive paint shops, but now business is advancing into other branches of industry. These include the pharmaceuticals, chemicals, printing and coating as well as the semi-conductor, wood processing and waste recycling industries. 'We are able to draw on the experience and competence we have acquired over several decades to offer attractively priced plants built to meet the exact requirements of our customers on the basis of standard modular products,' Satpal Bhatnagar explains.
Dürr's 5th Open House at Bietigheim-Bissingen runs from September 23 to 30, 2005. On September 27 Tanja Gönner, Baden-Württemberg's Regional Minister for the Environment, will be one of the guests finding out about the part Dürr is playing in evolving energy saving and environmentally sound production processes.

Dürr Air Pollution Control Systems Applications
Paint Shops for the Automotive Industry and other branches
For paint line applications Dürr offers adsorption systems for exhaust air treatment with adsorptive concentration. (Ecopure® KPR plants). Relatively large exhaust air streams are freed of VOCs in accordance with standard regulations, then continue as a smaller stream to be cleansed by a thermal oxidation process, usually primary energy saving regenerative thermal oxidation (Ecopure® RTO). As part of the energy management concept the heating energy contained within the exhaust air streams is used to preheat fresh air required for the paint lines.
Recuperative thermal oxidation systems (Ecopure® TAR) are installed for paint ovens to cleanse the exhaust air of pollutants. The heating energy that is set free is used for direct oven heating.
Printing and Coating Industry
Oxidation of pollutants in the exhaust air streams from the machines and the heating energy released by the process is harnessed fully for regenerative pre-heating of the exhaust air. Normal operation of Dürr regenerative thermal air pollution abatement plants (Ecopure® RTO) requires no primary energy. This is known as 'flameless oxidation'. Excess heating energy is diverted to the thermal oil system and used to heat the machines.
Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industries
After pollutants in the exhaust air from chemical and pharmaceutical industry processes have been oxidized, because of the halogenated hydrocarbons involved, it is necessary to eliminate the remaining inorganic components from the fumes by an absorption system. In addition, or alternatively, it is necessary to break down nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen in a catalytic reactor. Here, too, Dürr ensures that energy related aspects of the air pollution control system are optimized: Where residual liquid VOCs are available, these are made use of in order to save primary energy sources.
Waste Recycling Industry
The processing of butchers' waste, the manufacture of animal feed and the treatment of communal waste materials all lead to the production of unpleasant odours that can be banished by regenerative thermal oxidation. Dürr's reliable, metal seal damper system has proved its worth in ensuring the sustained high levels of efficiency required.
Composite Materials Industry
This branch of industry manufactures products designed to reduce the weight of finished articles, e.g. that of cars. Pollutants are produced that need to be removed from the exhaust air. Dürr offers adsorption systems to concentrate the pollutants in the exhaust air stream and regenerative thermal oxidation plants to remove them.
Foundries
During modern mould-making and casting processes exhaust air streams are produced that contain organic pollutants. Regenerative thermal oxidation plants are used for such applications.
Semi-conductor Industry
To cleanse exhaust air streams produced during the manufacture of electronic components, semi-conductor producers need adsorption systems for concentration coupled with regenerative or – as in the case of smaller production plants – recuperative oxidation plants. Here again, Dürr is the partner to choose.
Wood Processing Industry
During wood processing, e.g. in the manufacture of chipboard and panels, not only are pollutants produced in the form of dust but also those of an organic, volatile, and maloderous nature as well as others containing formaldehyde. The pollutants are separated out from large exhaust air streams by wet electrostatic filters and regenerative thermal oxidation. Once again efficiency is increased through Dürr energy management concepts: The individual streams of recirculating exhaust air can be guided, for example, so that pollutants can be concentrated and heating energy saved.
Full range of services for Ecopure® plants
In order to ensure maximum availability of its equipment Dürr Environmental and Energy Systems offer comprehensive and reliable customer services. These include a 24 hour helpline and modem-operated remote diagnosis. Innovative revamping concepts are available to bring older Dürr plants right up to date, so that compliance with emission limits is assured, operating costs are lowered and uptime is increased.
