DaimlerChrysler Saltillo, Mexico, Painting with Latest Dürr Robot Technology
07/13/2006
Stuttgart, July 13th, 2006 – Since April 24th, 2006, DaimlerChrysler has been painting with painting robots of the second Dürr robot generation in their paint-shop in Saltillo, Mexico, thus benefiting from a reduction in paint and energy consumption, as well as several maintenance advantages.
The two-week Easter break was used to disassemble the machines previously employed in the base coat field (10-bell ESTA) and to replace them with the latest Dürr painting robots of the model EcoRP E 33. In total, eight of these highly flexible robots are employed in two parallel lines for the painting of pick-ups. For the customer, this means a reduction in the number of required atomizers from 10 to 4 per base coat station, as well as the many related advantages concerning paint saving, energy cost reduction and maintenance benefits. Base coat application is carried out using the bell/bell process. The vehicles being painted are Dodge pick-ups of the RAM series. The cabs and loading spaces (“boxes) are conveyed on separate product carriers. As far as the painting of the boxes is concerned, this is effectively a case of interior painting. The act of accomplishing this using the well-established method of external electrostatic charging proved to be a particular challenge, which was mastered successfully. The arrangement of the robots, which are suspended on travelling rails positioned at a height of 1.9 m, is particularly favourable to the coating of the loading area, and also allows an ideal insight into the zone. There is yet another novelty, this being the so-called “maintenance hatches, which allow for an atomizer to be cleaned or repaired from the outside while being operated. Dürr received the order for the realization of this plant at the end of 2005.
The Dürr group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of products, systems and services for car manufacture. Their range of offers comprises several essential levels of vehicle production. As a system vendor, Dürr plans and builds paintshops and final assembly factories. In addition to this, Dürr supplies cleaning and filtration plants for the production of motor and gear components, as well as balancing systems for vehicle components.
